Orange County Skateboard Company Black Label Endorses Iranian Presidential Hopeful Agah

COSTA MESA – Professional skateboarder Salman Agah’s campaign in the upcoming imaginary primary received a boost on Friday with the endorsement of John Lucero, (I-Ca.), a prominent industry figure with a strong following among the hard core working-class skaters that Agah has struggled to win elsewhere.

The Hundreds Cast Their Vote

Yesterday, we were hot on the campaign trail, eating the daily special at Canters on Fairfax with The Hundreds. Looks like we got another vote. Don’t sleep. Vote Agah for president of the world in 2008.

Are You Independent?
March 28, 2008, 6:35 am

Websters unabridged dictionary defines the truck as “a wheeled vehicle consisting of a frame with a pair of wheels to carry and guide one end of the vehicle in turning sharp turns”. Independent is defined as “not dependent; not subject to control by others, not affiliated; not looking to others for one’s opinions or for guidance in conduct”. Are you independent? Think about it.

“Old Was Out and New Was In – It Was Time to Turn.” – C.R. Stecyk III

Or maybe it’s time for a change? It is what it is! Get some.

“The founders of Independent Truck Company are Fausto Vitello, Eric Swenson, Jay Shuirman, and Richard Novak. To know these four is to discover the essence of Independent: skateboarding, having fun, making money, improving products, a desire to win, and letting skaters be skaters — all with a ‘do it yourself/fuck off’ attitude.” – Bob Denike

I’d like to take a cyber moment and thank the founders of Independent for the inspiration to be independent. You’ve taught us well! How about you?

Danny Way 10 Years of Mega Ramping Part 3

The pages of Skatebook continue to come alive in this 3rd webisode about Danny Way and his decade of Mega Ramping dominance.

Marc Johnson by Jai Tanju

I truly love this piece. The collage of Marc Johnson was made by Jai Tanju using a black and white print and found skateboard deck wood chips. This image is out of Jai’s new book titled “just keep going”. The book is about Jai’s trip to Tokyo, Japan for an art show he was in. Pick up a copy when it comes out… it’s amazing. In the meantime, check out some of Jai’s other books.

The Daily Gonz #6: The Gonz Endorses Agah

Hot off the campaign trail, Salman Agah moves into prime position to overcome his latecomer status within the republican and democratic primary. World-famous gay rights activist, Mark Gonzales, publicly endorses top Iranian presidential hopeful Agah while sipping his morning coffee. Will we finally see a well groomed beard in the Oval Office? “Mark’s endorsement really comes as a shock and a surprise! It doesn’t get much better than that,” states Agah.

Shepard Fairey Barack Obama, I Mean Agah, Poster

Yeah that’s right, this is the first presidential campaign poster Shepard Fairey made. Now, if you thought it was going to be tough voting for the United States of America’s first black or woman president, how about we really shake things up and vote for me, America’s first Iranian president? My name is Salman Agah and I approve this message.

“Wherefore, instead of gazing at each other, with suspicious or doubtful curiosity, let each of us hold out to his neighbor the hearty hand of friendship, and unite in drawing a line, which, like an act of oblivion, shall bury in forgetfulness every former dissention. Let the names of Democrat and Republican be extinct; and let none other be heard among us, than those of a good citizen; an open and resolute friend; and a virtuous supporter of the RIGHTS of MANKIND, and of the FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES OF AMERICA.” – adapted from Thomas Paine’s Common Sense

I found this photo in my pile. It’s a photo of one of my long time mentors Jim Thiebaud and his son Jack. Jack recently did his first 50-50.

Mark Gonzales and Rick Howard France 1991

This is a photo that I took of Rick Howard and Mark Gonzales in 1991. It was the first year that I went to Europe to skateboard. I was an amateur riding for Real Skateboards. I ended up skating in all the pro contests while I was there. This photo was taken in the French Alps during Le Grand Bornand contest.

No Ruz, new day or New Year as the Iranians call it, is a celebration of spring Equinox. It has been celebrated by all the major cultures of ancient Mesopotamia. Sumerians, 3000BC, Babylonians 2000 BC, the ancient kingdom of Elam in Southern Persia 2000BC, Akaddians all have been celebrating it in one form or another. What we have today as No Ruz with its’ uniquely Iranian characteristics has been celebrated for at least 3000 years and is deeply rooted in the traditions of Zoroastrian belief system.

In this video, the original master of curb skating, John Lucero, shreds a dry curb with a little help from Black Label’s Sex Pistols-colored curb wax. OG SJ shred master Jason Adams joins in on the fun. Slap it like it’s hot.

Pat Schutte Blasting

This is my friend Pat Schutte from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He’s been blasting longer than anyone I know. This classic backside air was captured on film in the late 70’s / early 80’s . When Pat’s not serving up some excellent PR, taking his dogs to visit the sick and elderly, keeping a watchful eye on his daughter or wining and dining his lady, he’s still out blasting!

Tommy Guerrero

When I got really into skateboarding in the eighties, Tommy Guerrero was one of the skaters that I was most inspired by. I used to ride his pro model religiously. Powell Peralta Guerrero Pro Model, Independent Trucks, Schmitt Stix Rails, Cell Block III and Powell Peralta Cross-Bones wheels. That was the setup.

Vulcanized R.I.P.

“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” – Herman Melville (1819 – 1891).

In my opinion, the vacuum for the stage of originality has been set over the past several years because of brands jumping on the vulcanized (Vans) bandwagon. It’s only natural… a brand does something good and others imitate to gain market share or for whatever reason. In time that creates a stale environment in the market, allowing newcomers or brands that stuck to their guns the opportunity to stand out. I just got these Zoom Tre’s in the mail. Refreshing and original to say the least. Let the copying begin.

Oh yeah, wasn’t Nike the previously most copied shoe company in the world (The Dunk)? Copiers need not reply.

Oh man, I can’t wait to go here and skate in these .

Julien Stranger = Style

In the early 90’s I had to good fortune and pleasure to skate and travel around the world with Julien Stranger. At the time I was very closed off from the people around me, but enjoyed the adventure very much. Julien is one of the more intelligent people I got to travel with and also one of the most inspirational. Check out this frontside air. I don’t remember who shot it, but I found it in my stash of photos. Amazing!

I went to see one race this year. It was Anaheim 2, the third round of the 08 SX race season. When Stewart’s video came up on the screen prior to opening ceremonies where he announced that he’s not racing due to a pre-existing injury, I couldn’t believe it. Well the season is now half way over and I miss this guy. This is an older photo of the fastest guy on two wheels. Braaap. Also hard to believe, is the fact that two-strokes, like the one pictured here are gone as well! RIP

I find it hard to believe that boards similar to this Vision Shredder 10 are in someone’s collection. This is a picture I found on the internet of the first board that I had as a kid in the 80’s. It got run over by a pick up truck after I bailed bombing a hill in San Jose.
