Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School An Adventure Of A Lifetime

Me with Frank Hawley Multi-Time NHRA Drag Racing Funny Car Champion and World Class Instructor, September 25, 2008 Las Vegas Motor Speedway

When I decided to go to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, I had no idea what to expect. As a matter of fact I signed up at the very last minute so from the time I was accepted until the moment I got there I didn’t have much time to develop expectations. It was suggested that each student immerse him or herself in the procedures for driving the car, understanding where all the controls are and what they do, and to have it all memorized. That meant I had homework to do. Just the thought of school brought me back to the dreadful days of high school, where I would usually escape by imagining myself traveling around the world skateboarding new and undiscovered terrain. For a split second a similar thought of dread echoed in my brain as I contemplated what this experience was going to be like. Class started at 7:30am sharp on Wednesday and Thursday, September 24-25th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds with Cat Power

Nick Cave Performing "Into My Arms"

Several nights ago Price and I went to the Hollywood Bowl to see Cat Power along with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Skalebrity sightings included Andrew Reynolds, Braydon Szfranski, Slash, and Alyssa Lightner from Sole Tech. The Hollywood Bowl is an amazing venue. It is the largest outdoor amphitheater in the United States. The best part about it is that you can bring a picnic. The concert was fantastic. We highly recommend the Bowl.

Skateboards

Pictured here are two of my new pro models that were just released on Black Label. It’s quite humorous to me actually because besides giving Lucero, Shepard Fairey’s phone number, I didn’t have much to do with these designs. When I first turned pro for Real Skateboards in 1991 and as well when I rode for Lance Mountain’s company The Firm in the late 90’s I used to be involved with every aspect of the design of my boards. I’d say I was somewhat particular about my shapes and dimensions even down to 1/16 of an inch.  I actually used to draw my own templates and submit ideas for graphics and sign off on the design and dimensions. Maybe that is one of the reasons that there is such a disconnect in the market for skaters who buy skateboards; they just aren’t personal anymore. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, quite the contrary I’m grateful to have pro models out still, it’s just my opinion that if more pros actually took the time to be involved with the products that had their name on them that consumers would respond. I may be wrong. Anyway, the deck on the left is a graphic that Shepard Fairey did for me celebrating 20 years of the Black Label Elephant and the other one is a graphic adapted from Jason Adams Cadilac Ranch series of paintings.

2008 Hammer Fellows Dinner | John Lautner’s Hope Residence and Elrod House

Price standing on the front lawn of the Hope residence

Yesterday, thanks to my wife Price, I had the great pleasure of being one of 60 or so people to visit the astonishing Southridge home of Dolores and Bob Hope designed by John Lautner in Palm Springs. This remarkable property set on eight acres was the precursor for a dinner at another very well-known Lautner design, the Elrod House. As you will see in the 30+ images, we had a delightful time. A special thank you is in order for David Morehouse and Laura Sils from the Hammer Museum who constructed this fabulous evening. They are wonderful people! Check out our pictures.

David Bailey Motocross Legend

It’s not often that I get star struck. I simply don’t give a damn. However when I saw David Bailey inside the confines of the ASR Trade Show in San Diego, I got felt giddy. For those of you that don’t know Bailey is an 80’s motocross ICON. He defined tenacious back in the day and rides a wheelchair now to prove it. The fact of the matter is that he’s been a voice for motocross for decades and paved the way for the conditions that riders currently enjoy. A true champion.

Lions In Zimbabwe

Last year, along with a couple friends, Price and I traveled to Africa for 3 weeks. One of our stops was a lion rehabilitation center in Zimbabwe. Our dear friends at Lodges of Botswana put together an immaculate itenerary for us. Word to the Mother Land. The lions in the picture are 10 month old male orphans. We were each given a small stick to protect ourselves. Good thing they just finished eating.

The cover and images of Kate Moss in the new Interview magazine are extraordinary. The last of the Super Models delivers a smokin hot photo essay of Kate to say the least.

James Stewart Searches, Seeks and Destroys!

The weather channel should name a hurricane after this kid, cause he just decimated and demolished the playing field. James Bubba Stewart does it! A perfect season! Not even RC showed the type of dominance displayed in his career, like what  James Bubba Stewart displayed this past outdoor motocross season. Now that the season is over James Stewart becomes the 1st ever racer in the history of racing to win every major title. Not to mention according to the “AMA Toyota MX Laps Led” out of the 382 laps raced in the series, Stewart led 369 of them. Talk about dominant. Stewart’s 2008 outdoor campaign will forever be remembered in the annuls of motocross history as a season littered with vision, determination, heart and commitment. Stewart has known since he was a child that he wanted to be dominant. As you can see in the photo James is an imaginative rider not limiting himself in any capacity. Stay tuned as James Stewart and the rest of Team America proceed to defend our title at the Motocross des Nations in England.
